POM and Nylon Guide Rings
High-Performance Composite Wear Parts: Engineered for Extreme Loads and Durability
We supply a comprehensive range of advanced engineered polymer and composite guide components designed to eliminate metal-to-metal contact and maintain absolute system alignment.
Whether you are dealing with heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders, extreme-pressure environments, or applications requiring self-lubrication, choosing the right wear material—from Phenolic Fabrics and PTFE to PEEK—is critical to preventing cylinder scoring and extending equipment lifespan.
Below is an overview of our core composite wear components and their specific applications within demanding industrial systems.
Classification by Material
The choice of material dictates the load-bearing capacity, friction coefficient, and environmental resistance of the guide ring.
POM (Polyoxymethylene / Acetal) Guide Rings
POM is a highly crystalline, high-performance engineering thermoplastic. POM guide rings are often reinforced with glass fiber (POM-GF) or filled with PTFE to enhance their mechanical properties.
Friction & Wear: Excellent low-friction characteristics. It operates smoothly even in environments with marginal lubrication, preventing the “stick-slip” phenomenon.
Dimensional Stability: Extremely low water absorption rate. POM maintains its precise dimensions and mechanical strength even when submerged in hydraulic fluids or water for long periods.
Temperature Range: Typically operates effectively between -40°C and +110°C.
Applications: Ideal for standard hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic systems, and agricultural machinery where smooth movement, precise tolerances, and moisture resistance
are required.

Nylon (Polyamide / PA) Guide Rings
Nylon guide rings are usually manufactured from PA6 or PA66 and are heavily reinforced with glass fiber or carbon fiber to withstand extreme pressures.
Load Capacity: Nylon possesses exceptionally high compressive strength and impact resistance. It can absorb severe shock loads and heavy radial forces much better than standard POM.
Wear Resistance: Highly resistant to abrasion and tough working conditions.
Water Absorption: Nylon has a higher water absorption rate than POM. In aqueous environments, it can swell, which means larger clearance tolerances must be designed into the cylinder to prevent seizing.
Temperature Range: Generally operates between -40°C and +120°C (special heat-stabilized grades can go higher).
Applications: Specifically chosen for heavy-duty applications, such as construction equipment (excavators, bulldozers), mining machinery, and high-pressure industrial presses where extreme transverse loads and vibrations are present.

Classification by Application Area
Depending on where they are installed in the cylinder, guide rings are categorized into two types:
Piston Guide Rings: Installed on the outer diameter of the piston. They guide the piston as it moves through the cylinder barrel, protecting the cylinder wall from being scratched by the metal piston.
Rod Guide Rings: Installed in the inner diameter of the cylinder gland (head). They guide the piston rod as it extends and retracts, protecting the rod surface and ensuring the rod seal maintains a proper concentric profile to prevent leaks.
Classification by Cut Style
Because guide rings are typically made of rigid plastics, they are almost always manufactured with a split (cut) to allow for easy installation into closed grooves.
| Cut Type | Description | Best For |
| Angle Cut (Scarf Cut) | Cut at a 30° or 45° angle. The most common configuration. | General hydraulic applications. The angle allows the ring to expand/contract with temperature changes while maintaining a continuous guiding surface. |
| Straight Cut (Butt Cut) | Cut at a straight 90° angle. | Systems with rotary motion or where fluid bypass is not a primary concern. Easiest to manufacture. |
| Step Cut (Z-Cut) | Cut with overlapping steps. | High-precision applications where limiting fluid flow across the ring is necessary to protect downstream seals. |

| Classification Criterion | Specific Type | Core Characteristics | Applications & Advantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classification by Material[cite: 1] | POM (Polyoxymethylene) | Excellent low-friction characteristics, extremely low water absorption, and high dimensional stability. | Standard hydraulic and pneumatic systems, agricultural machinery. Advantage: Prevents stick-slip phenomenon and is highly moisture-resistant. |
| Nylon (Polyamide) | Exceptionally high compressive strength and impact resistance, but higher water absorption than POM. | Heavy-duty machinery (excavators, mining, industrial presses). Advantage: Absorbs extreme transverse loads and severe vibrations effectively. | |
| Classification by Application Area[cite: 2] | Piston Guide Rings | Installed on the outer diameter of the piston. | Moves with the piston through the cylinder barrel. Advantage: Protects the cylinder wall from metal-to-metal scratching. |
| Rod Guide Rings | Installed in the inner diameter of the cylinder gland (head). | Guides the piston rod as it extends and retracts. Advantage: Protects the rod surface and ensures proper seal concentricity to prevent leaks. | |
| Classification by Cut Style[cite: 3] | Angle Cut (Scarf Cut) | Cut at a 30° or 45° angle. | General hydraulic applications. Advantage: Allows expansion/contraction with temperature changes while maintaining a continuous guiding surface. |
| Straight Cut (Butt Cut) | Cut at a straight 90° angle. | Systems with rotary motion. Advantage: Easiest to manufacture, ideal when fluid bypass is not a primary concern. | |
| Step Cut (Z-Cut) | Cut with overlapping steps (Z-shape). | High-precision applications. Advantage: Limits fluid flow across the ring, protecting downstream seals from pressure spikes. |
Heavy Construction & Mining
In high-pressure hydraulic applications, these guide rings are engineered to withstand extreme shock loads, pressure spikes, and abrasive environments in heavy-duty earthmoving equipment. Nylon is typically preferred in this sector due to its exceptionally high compressive strength.
Industrial Automation
As part of precision pneumatic sealing solutions, guide rings are designed for low-friction and high-speed repetitive operations in modern manufacturing assembly lines. POM excels in this area due to its superior low-friction properties.
Agricultural Machinery
Guide rings contribute to robust fluid power profiles built to resist UV, harsh weathering, and constant exposure to abrasive particles in open-field environments.
Fluid & Pressure Control
These rings work in tandem with custom molded seals and heavy-duty O-rings formulated for reliable dynamic fluid control and leak prevention in critical valve systems.
